Dial A For Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto
I first heard about this book from a review Kirstie Ellen posted (link here) a couple of weeks ago. I immediately requested it through my local library and it was absolutely worth the wait for it to arrive.
Meddy has spent her whole life trying to be the perfect daughter and niece. But when a first date goes horribly wrong and she accidentally kills the man, Meddy immediately calls her mother and aunties who spring into action.
Unfortunately, everything seems to go wrong from there. The corpse is accidentally delivered to the resort where the wedding Meddy and her family are working is taking place. And, as if that weren’t bad enough, Meddy runs into her ex-boyfriend. The one she can’t stop thinking about. The one who got away.
Can Meddy, her mother, and the aunties keep the corpse hidden, pull off a lavish wedding, and get the boy? Or will it all come crashing down around them?
This is honestly one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. I devoured it and I was honestly sad to see it end. I wanted to move in with the aunties, to live in their world forever.
But beyond just being funny, the book has a lot to say. The struggles of being part of an immigrant family in America. Balancing living your own life with family obligation. Tradition and language and love. And it weaves it all together in such a charming, enigmatic way.
The book absolutely deserves a massive 5/5 stars. It’s definitely one of the best books I’ve read recently and if Jesse Q. Sutanto has any other books, I will be adding them to my TBR list shortly. Find a copy of this and read it now!
