An Unattractive Vampire by Jim McDoniel
I found this book listed on someone’s blog earlier this week (I wish I could remember which blog!) and immediately looked it up on Amazon. The Kindle version was a steal at $2.99 (plus I had a $1 digital credit). I downloaded it and started it at while my hair dye was setting that night at the salon. I finished it the next day. It was that good.
The story follows 1,000 year old vampire Yulric Bile as he attempts to deal with the modern world and the modern interpretation of vampires. Yulric does not sparkle and he is instantly antagonistic towards those vampires who do. Along for the ride are Amanda and her 8 year old brother, Simon.
This book was exactly what I needed. It was irreverent and funny. It had clever allusions to vampire lore. (I suspect the author also listens to the Lore podcast.) All in all, I enjoyed it heartily.
My one complaint is that frequently (at least in the formatting of the Kindle version) the dialogue tags made it difficult to tell who was speaking. There were a number of times I had to re-read a passage to figure out who was saying what.
I’d give this 4/5 stars. It’s a good, light read and will have you cracking up.
