You Owe Me A Murder by Eileen Cook
I bought this on Kindle after seeing it in a list of books to check out that Kirstie Ellen posted on Upside-Down Books.
The plot is basically “Strangers on a Plane” meets Generation Z. Two teenagers meet in an airport during an extended flight delay. Kim has recently broken up with Conner and is now stuck on a 2 week trip to London with him and his new girlfriend. Nicki is returning from a visit to her dad in Vancouver and complaining about how her mom won’t let her move.
They bond over their misfortunes and share a bottle of purloined vodka, musing over how much easier their lives would be if they could just knock off the objects of their enmity. And how it would be the perfect crime if one picked off the other’s target. The next day, Kim arrives in London, Nicki disappears into the crowd, never the twain to me. Until Connor is pushed in front of an oncoming subway train and Kim realizes that it wasn’t all just idle talk.
So, overall, I really enjoyed this book. Though as an old, I did find myself frequently yelling at my Kindle. Teenagers, I tell you. But apart from that, I found the story thrilling and attention grabbing. I certainly didn’t see the final act coming.
I would give this 4/5 stars. It was honestly a very good book and I will likely be thinking about it for a while. Especially while on my long layover next in May…
