Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
Again, I know I’m behind the curve on this one. However, I wanted to read the book before I watched the movie and I haven’t had a lot of time for reading lately. So, I took this with me on vacation.
I really wanted to love this book. There were so many parts of it that I adored. The overall plot was excellent and it really makes you feel like you’ve just been dropped into Singapore. The descriptions of the food and locales were decadent. The love story drew me in and I was rooting for them. It had all the makings of an amazing story.
But it didn’t quite deliver. For one thing, there were soooo many characters to keep track of. Side plots upon side plots, some of which I cared about, others I didn’t. And while the footnotes were usually informative or funny, they began to grate after a while.
And by the end, I’d lost track of all the things that had drawn me in at the beginning. The plot had become convoluted. So much could have been solved with a single conversation (one of my pet peeves, especially in romantic storylines).
Lastly, the ending is murky at best. Not a true cliffhanger, but also not fully resolved. I know there are sequels but I probably won’t read them. I have come to find that I really don’t care that much what happens to these characters. Which is a damn shame, because I wanted to in the beginning. I wanted to get sucked into a series. I wanted that feeling of finishing the first book and having to download the ebook of the second because I can’t wait to get into the next story. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.
I give this book 3 stars. There were highs and lows, but I did finish the book. All in all, it was just sort of okay.
